I chose to make Walking Sticks from Mesquite because of the dramatic way the natural contrasting colors of the wood add distinctive character to each carving. I harvest the sticks in the Winter when the sap is down and the snakes are asleep. If you are not familiar with Mesquite, it has thorns. Big thorns, the Indians used to use them for needles. After a day of cutting sticks I look like the loser in a cat fight. The sticks then season for a year at which time they are soaked and the bark removed. The stick is then scraped and filed, ready to carve. I always pursue a design that allows the brown cinnamon of the heartwood to contrast the yellow outer layer. The stick then gets the final sanding, three coats of hand rubbed Danish oil, and a leather strap. The best way to describe carving Mesquite is ornery. |
